Microblading vs Powder Brows

Microblading vs Powder Brows vs Combination Brows

By Rebornurself, Chennai · Updated

All three are semi-permanent eyebrow treatments, sometimes called eyebrow tattoos. They differ in how the pigment is placed, and that changes how the brows look, which skin they suit and how long they last. Here is how to choose.

The Short Answer

  • Microblading: Fine hair strokes. The most natural look, best on normal to dry skin. Typically lasts 2–3 years.
  • Powder brows (ombre brows): Soft shading made of tiny dots. Looks like brows filled in with powder and heals well on oily skin. Typically lasts 1–3 years.
  • Combination brows (combo brows): Hair strokes at the front, shading through the rest. Fuller than microblading, more textured than powder brows. Typically lasts 12–18 months.

Start With Your Skin Type

Skin type matters more than anything else. On oily skin or skin with large pores, the fine lines of microblading can spread slightly as they heal and end up looking soft or blurred. Shading has no fine lines to blur, so powder brows usually heal more evenly on oily skin. In Chennai's heat and humidity, many clients with combination skin find shading or combination brows last better too.

  • Normal to dry skin: Any of the three can work. Microblading gives the crispest strokes.
  • Combination skin: Combination brows or powder brows.
  • Oily skin or large pores: Powder brows are usually the safest choice.

Then Decide on the Look

Think about how you like your brows on a good day. If you prefer them bare, brushed up and natural, microblading or combination brows are closest. If you usually fill them in with pencil or powder, powder brows will look like your normal made-up brow without the daily effort.

For men

Men usually want brows that look denser without looking done. Because men's skin is often oilier, powder brows kept very light, or combination brows, tend to heal better than microblading alone. The shape is kept straighter and lower, with no sharp arch or hard front edge.

How Long Each One Lasts

All permanent makeup fades gradually. Sun, oily skin, exfoliating skincare such as retinol or acids, and smoking all make it fade sooner. Fine hair strokes fade before shading, which is why combination brows usually need a colour boost earlier than powder brows.

What Is the Same for All Three

  • Numbing: We apply topical numbing cream for about 20 minutes before starting.
  • You approve the shape: Brows are mapped to your face and drawn on first. Nothing starts until you are happy with the outline.
  • Healing: Brows look darker for the first week, then flake and soften. Skin needs about a month to heal fully.
  • Touch-up: A touch-up any time between 30 and 90 days lets us adjust depth and definition to how your skin healed.
