Dark Lips Treatment: How Lip Neutralization Works
By Rebornurself, Chennai · Updated

Dark or uneven lips are one of the most common concerns we see, from both women and men. Lip balms and scrubs can help with dryness, but they rarely change lip colour. Lip neutralization is a permanent makeup treatment that corrects the colour itself.
What Causes Dark Lips?
- Genetics: Many people with medium and deeper skin tones naturally have darker lips, or lips that are darker at the edges than in the centre.
- Smoking: Heat and tobacco darken the lips over time. This is often called smoker's lips.
- Sun exposure: Lips have very little protection from the sun, and daily exposure darkens them, especially the lower lip.
- Other causes: Some medications, health conditions and allergies to lip products can change lip colour. If your lips have darkened suddenly, see a doctor first.
How Lip Neutralization Works
Colour correction works on the same idea as a makeup colour corrector. Dark lips usually have blue, grey or brown undertones. A warmer corrective pigment is placed into the lips to cancel those tones out, so they heal to a lighter, more even colour. The pigment is chosen for your skin tone at the consultation.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Mildly uneven lips may only need one session and a touch-up. Very dark lips are lightened in stages, because putting in too much corrector at once can heal unevenly. After seeing your lips, we tell you how many sessions to expect before you book.
What Healing Looks Like
- Days 1–3: Lips look brighter or darker than the final colour and may feel slightly swollen.
- Days 3–7: Lips flake. Do not peel the flakes; let them come away on their own.
- Weeks 2–4: Colour can look faded or patchy, then gradually comes back as the skin settles. The true result shows after about a month.
- 30–90 days: The touch-up, where we even out any patches and decide whether another session is needed.
Lip Neutralization or Lip Blushing?
Neutralization corrects dark colour. Lip blushing adds a tint. On dark lips, a tint alone can heal brownish or muddy, so we usually neutralize first and add lip blush later if you want more colour. If your lips are already fairly even and you just want a fresher tone, lip blushing alone may be enough.
Who Should Wait
Tell us if you get cold sores, as treatment can trigger an outbreak and you may need preventive medication from your doctor. We also do not treat lips that are cut, sunburnt or have an active infection. If you smoke, the result is likely to fade sooner, and you should not smoke at all while the lips heal.
